The Blackdown Hills Hedge Association runs a collection of workshops, giving a wide choice of opportunities to discover
practical uses of materials gleaned from the hedgerow.
Rustic Hedgerow Chair
with Ivor Hancock, Buckland St Mary Village Hall – 10am to 4pm
Discover how West Country folk used to make, strong, comfortable hedgerow chairs with materials from hedges, woods and gardens.
The secret of their craft was in selecting the right shapes of branches for the different parts of their chairs.
Cut green from the hedge these "grown components" had great inherent strength and, when fitted together in a cleverly devised sequence,
produced a chair of proven strength and reliability. Materials and tools supplied. Take home your own hedgerow chair.

Blackdown Splint Basket
with Martin Turner, Buckland St Mary Village Hall – 10am to 4pm
This local version of the traditional Westcountry Splint basket was used on farms for carrying potatoes, turnips etc.
The sturdy construction gives it many uses around the garden and home. Using goat willow from the Blackdowns and some green woodworking techniques,
you will fashion and assemble your own basket to take home. Materials included.

Traditional Hazel Hurdles
with Martin Turner, Buckland St Mary Village Hall – 10am to 4pm
Traditionally made hazel hurdles are the strongest and most durable of all and can be hard work to make. In this introductory day, Martin will show
you how to select hazel rods from ones he has already cut, how to set up the uprights or zails, split the rods and twist the hazel into the weave.
By the end of the day you will come away with a small 3ft by 3ft hurdle and good knowledge of the fundamentals of hurdle making.

Hedgerow Baskets
with Izzy Beazley, Buckland St Mary Village Hall – 10am to 4pm
An introduction to basket making. Create a unique and colourful round willow basket incorporating hedgerow materials. Learn about the Somerset
tradition of harvesting willow and find out how it is prepared and used in crafts.

Willow Christmas Decorations (half-day course)
with Izzy Beazley, Buckland St Mary Village Hall – 10am to 1pm or 2pm to 5pm
Come and make beautiful festive decorations with willow and hedgerow material. Create wreaths, table centre pieces and other hanging shapes
to give your home a rustic, natural feel this Christmas.
This is a half day course with one class from 10am to 1pm and a second on the same day between 2pm and 5pm.

Cancellations
We understand that due to unforeseen circumstances you may be unable to attend a course that has been booked.
With this in mind, we have the following policy to try and be as fair as possible to all.
- For cancellations by you more than six weeks prior to the course date, a full refund or the option to rebook on another date.
- For cancellations by you less than six weeks prior to the course date, no refund is possible unless we can fill the place(s). In this case we will provide you with a refund of the price paid less 10% administration.
We reserve the right to change dates due to unforeseen circumstances at our end. However, every effort will be made to
avoid this and in such circumstances we will offer a full refund or alternative dates.
